Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Q & A

What is musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an imaging procedure that uses an ultrasound machine to look at soft tissue structures of the musculoskeletal system such as tendons and ligaments to assess for an injury right in the office. This can help your doctor diagnose and manage your injury. Unlike other types of imaging, like x-rays and CT scans, ultrasound imaging does not use any radiation.

Who can musculoskeletal ultrasound benefit?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound can patients with conditions such as:

  • Tendonitis
  • Tendinosis
  • Tendon tear/strain
  • Ligament sprain
  • Muscle tear/strain
  • Joint swelling
  • Nerve entrapment

What happens during a musculoskeletal ultrasound?

During the musculoskeletal ultrasound examination, you will lie down or sit down on an exam table and your doctor will use the ultrasound machine to evaluate structures around your injury to make a diagnosis. In some cases, treatment with injections may be appropriate and the ultrasound machine can be used in order to accurately guide the needle into the precise location for an injection.
